Why is it that everybody talks about wanting a walkable community but so few of them exist outside an outrageous price point? Or that everyone wants to live in the city but nobody can afford it? There are several factors to this but the main one is zoning laws. Many of your favorite cities have outdated zoning laws making the development of affordable housing in urban areas extremely difficult. Unfortunately, many of those cities don’t plan to update their zoning laws any time soon. Fortunately for this town, Chattanooga has.
Over the summer Mayor Tim Kelly’s zoning reform bill passed unanimously and Chattanooga underwent its first zoning rehaul since the 1960s. So what does this mean for the future of Chattanooga? It means the opportunity for affordable housing is there, we just have to take it.
Since we established ourselves in 2013, MiKeN Development has made equitable urban projects its mission, which is why we are here working towards developments that benefit the majority of people who live in this city. Now that Chattanooga has a clearer focus on affordable housing, our team is ready to provide it.
Our shared focus is community developments that incorporate key factors: affordability, walkability, and access to public transportation. We don’t think that living in the city means you have to compromise on living well and we’re prepared to build such a community. Already we have proposed units for unused lots on Glass Street, equitable housing in East Chattanooga, and more. With our contacts, our expertise, and our knowledgeable team, we are building change that will have lasting impact.
There is so much potential for thriving, equitable communities in Chattanooga. We don’t believe you should have to sacrifice anything to live well, and neither should you.
